FAQs

Q: Am I a suitable mentor for the EMSOC scheme?

A: If you’re committed to supporting scholars of colour and working to help make our field a more diverse and inclusive place, then yes. You must be willing to be available for the full duration of the mentorship, and to attend the training session.

Q: What are the time commitments?

A: We recommend that mentors and mentees meet for three 40–45-minute meetings over the course of a calendar year.

Q: How long does this scheme run?

A: The scheme will run for a calendar year (January-December 2025).

Q: Can I meet my mentee online?

A: Yes, meetings can take place online or in-person.

Q: What things can we talk about?

A: You can talk about anything from confidence-building to career-related topics. You should not be reading drafts of PhD chapters. Any other materials are by negotiation with the mentee.

Q: What if I don’t know the best advice to give my mentee?

A: If you are unsure what advice to give in any given situation please be honest (do not guess!) and contact the committee so we can help you.

Q: Can I choose my mentee?

A: The committee will match you to a suitable mentor, according to application requirements.

Q: How can I use the summary sheet?

A: The summary sheet is optional and can be used before the session/s to help you both get the most out of them.

Q: Who can I contact when the mentor/mentee relationship is not working as I would have hoped and what can be done?

A: Email us at mentoring.srs.emsoc@gmail.com and we will work with you to resolve the issue.

Q: Is this scheme planned to run for more than a year?

A: The scheme is reviewed on an annual basis, with the intention and hope that it will continue in the future.
